Caolan Larkin, a 30-year-old Irish Army soldier from Draperstown, appeared in Londonderry Magistrates' Court facing three charges related to the discovery of cocaine worth up to £60,000. Larkin is accused of possessing cocaine, possessing cocaine with intent to supply, and possessing a quantity of cannabis, all on September 19. During a police search of an address in Draperstown, 1.2kg of suspected cocaine and cannabis were found, along with various items like mobile phones, a laptop, and postal receipts for Portugal. Although Larkin admitted some of the cocaine was his, he refused to disclose its source. The prosecution opposed bail due to flight risk and concerns of re-offending. The defense argued that Larkin had dedicated seven years to public service in the Republic of Ireland and could be managed on bail with conditions. However, the judge denied bail, citing ongoing investigations and the possible involvement of organized crime groups, remanding Mr. Larkin in custody to appear again next month.
