Photography is a lens to capture the world around us- and also, it’s kinda difficult, actually. Anyone can make a picture black and white, but framing, color correction, aperture, white balance, and all that other stuff is hard. Umurungi Generation and its Macro DLC are not hard, but it is a game about capturing the world and preserving it, the good and the bad. Something of a 3D iSpy book, Umurangi uses clues to guide you around it’s little world to find the smallest details, and draws your attention around its tiny little sandboxes. Umurangi Generation initially released for the PC in 2020, and a year later would reach the switch, with gyro controls in handheld mode that are apparently very, very cool, then hit Xbox One in 2022, and PS4 and 5 in 2024, with the addition of support for PSVR. Umurangi was developed by a small team, Origame Digital, based out of Australia and led by Naphtali Faulkner, a member of the Ngai te Rangi iwi of New Zealand, which influenced both the name- Umurangi meaning Red Sky, and various bits of the world, most notably towards the end, although notably, elements of broader Australian culture and criticisms of its government also appear, although you don’t necessarily need to know a lot about that kinda stuff.
