This strategy was not my own but worked great. Kill and retreat to the crates underwater until they lose sight, repeat.

This took around 50 minutes to beat. This attempt took around 26 minutes of that time. Long checkpoint. You get the checkpoint the moment you latch onto the helicopter. You will most likely die but ignore the enemies and make sure you get latched on, die, and you have the checkpoint.
