Critics weren't impressed by this PS2 exclusive based on the smash hit tv show despite it being one of the most faithful adaptations of all time. Does it completely suck or is it maybe worth checking out? Is it a 4 / 10 like IGN says.? Or... is it UNDER RATED?
Prepare to face another worst day ever as federal agent Jack Bauer and his fellow CTU agents. The odds are stacked against him like always as he'll have to race against the clock to prevent terrorists from unleashing an earthquake that will wipe out the entire city of Los Angeles. Sounds pretty easy for one of the most bad ass action heroes of all time but that's not all - to make matters worse - His daughter and girlfriend have been kidnapped! Still sounds too easy? The vice president is going to be assassinated too!
It's no secret that 24 is one the best tv shows of all time and it's arguably known for creating the binge watching fad way before Netflix made it cool. The game nails the look, presentation, and feel of the TV show which is no easy feat. 24 Series vet, Duppy Demetrius, who helped write a whopping 28 episodes of the tv show, delivers a award nominated script filled with a staggering amount of twists and turns.
This isn't your typical third person shooter as it features a little bit of something for everyone! Want to see if your sniper skills are elite? Protect fellow CTU agents from hoards of bad guys with your sniper rifle as they attempt to diffuse weapons of mass destruction. Love casual mini game puzzles that rely heavily on trial and error and memorization? Put your brain into overdrive as you hack door locks, crack passcodes, and repair hard drives. Last but not least is the interrogation mini game. Get ready to feel true stress and anxiety as you try to coax vital information from all sorts of crazies!
The voice acting is simply amazing with all of the cast of the tv show returning to voice their characters. I was surprised to find that even some of the more obscure characters are featured as well including Zachary Quinto before he was famous for playing Spock in J.J. Abram's 2009 reboot of Star Trek. The impressive voice acting doesn't stop there as new bad guys created specifically for the game are extremely well done and even include bad boy Hollywood actor, Tom Sizemore.
So maybe the enemies aren't exactly the smartest of all time but of course they aren't going to be any match for Jack Bauer! Enemies routinely don't react to when you make a bunch of noise and also sometimes just stand there like a deer in the headlights allowing you to get a easy head shot on them. Some critics felt the subpar enemy AI made the game way too easy and ruined some of the stealth sections of the game. While most of them will act like lambs being led to the slaughter, every now and then they will put up a good fight.
Probably the biggest and most common criticism of the game is the rather peculiar camera system. The vertical movement of the camera has a extremely annoying auto center feature that will drive most hardcore gamers crazy. You can set many of the camera settings to manual in the options menu but they unfortunately don't seem to have any real affect on the game. The camera is most likely designed this way on purpose to make the controls easier for non video game players. While the camera isn't ideal, I did get used to it and I never felt it was so broken that it made the game bad in any way. One thing I did really like however was the zoom in feature that lets you fine tune your targeting to get easy headshots.
This is the one area where I disagreed with the critics the most. I loved the driving sections and they were my hands down favorite part of the game. The secret to handling in the game is simple - use the hand brake. You can do some crazy hard turns with it and it's vastly superior to using the regular brakes. One thing I don't think most critics realized - just get out of your car and commandeer another much faster ride GTA style!
