Covert Ops - Nuclear Dawn or Chase the Express as it's known everywhere else in the world. The Critics just couldn't stand this mix of Resident Evil meets Cheesy 90's Action Film. Does it completely suck or is it maybe worth checking out? Is it a 4 / 10 like IGN says.? Or... is it UNDER RATED?
Terrorists have hijacked a train loaded with nuclear warheads! Their demands are simple - a ransom payment of 20 billion dollars! It's time to live out your Under Siege 2 Steven Seagal fantasies as you'll have to blast away bad guys while trying to rescue a French ambassador. You won't have to face the threat of nuclear disaster alone as you'll be teaming up with Christina, a smoking hot special police agent, as you take back the train - one car at a time.
While it's not exactly a horror game, this train is filled with blood splatter and brutally murdered corpses. Enemies let out a Metal Gear Solid style scream upon death and a eerie and foreboding soundtrack will for sure creep you out! The cramped layout of the train is perfect for inducing anxiety and claustrophobia. Hold on to your controller because there are plenty of jump scares to found throughout!
Tired of annoying puzzles that make no sense like the infamous water sample puzzle from Resident Evil 3? Well there's none of that in this game! Instead you can man the anti aircraft guns and blow away an entire squadron of helicopters! You can catch up with a runaway train before the entire thing explodes! And last but not least - disarm some nuclear bombs with your handy dandy wire clippers before you get turned into a pile of radioactive ash.
There's a lot to see and do with over 6 different endings total in the game. You're choices matter here so if you make the wrong decision, you'll end up with a lotta dead characters and a not so great ending. There's a sweet set of dual wielding pistols with infinite ammo to unlock if you can complete the "S" Scenario. This what-if alternate version of the game includes a alternate boss fight, a new area that isn't the train, and a new main character to play as.
A lot of reviews say the enemy soldiers in this game aren't any smarter than your average zombie. I guess they never made it too far because the enemies here can be sneaky SOBs. Think your safe while hanging out in the train's sacred bathroom area? Think again! Enemies can use the toilet too or even knock on the door to catch you with your pants down. Always keep two eyes on your enemies because these soldiers have a few tricks up their sleeves.
Ah yes. The two things critics love to hate. Not sure why though because tank controls are better than ever here. The ground breaking 180 degree quick turn first introduced in Dino Crisis is back and faster than ever! Your character has a super effective backwards dodge move that is useful for avoiding enemy robots and the occasional falling boulders. On the flip side - I will admit the auto targeting feature in the game can be very finicky especially in a tense boss battle but it's no deal breaker. Oh but what about the camera? It's better than ever too because now you can actually move it around and can also change the camera angles in some areas. In addition to that - your character can also now perform some Syphon Filter-esqe dodges for extreme tactical bad-assery.
It wouldn't be classic survival horror without some cheese and camp thrown in! Some critics embraced it but others found it best to be ignored. The character models in the cut scenes have a weird creepy plastic feel to them and one critic claimed they looked like vile mockeries of human figures. Even with all factored in, I thought these cutscenes were freaking awesome. They are so action packed and fun who cares how bad the graphics are? If laughably bad is your thing, there are a handful of Jill sandwich level one liners to be found.
so should you check out this game? Do you like Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, and Syphon Filter and wish they had a baby? Need a new survival horror game to speedrun? Love high pressure situations where if you cut the wrong wire it's nuclear bye bye? Then this game is for you my friends.
