Wait? Extra Stage 1? What ever happened to stage 2? This game has extra unlockable stages after every stage depending on your performance in the previous stages. There are three extra stages in this game and that makes for seven stages if you're going for the true ending. I don't know what triggers the extra stages though. It might be whether you continued or not yet.

Update: Extra stages and most likely the true ending route of the game only requires you to capture spellcards. It doesn't matter how many times you die or continue. Though if you are dying, you probably won't be capturing the spellcards anyways and you won't make it that far in the game either.

I did some poking around with translating the description for the Clear? achievement and testing what it says. It said something like "Our fight isn't over. Experience the rewinding of time. Capturing spellcards are related to breaking out of this loop." Hooray for poor translation by me. Tested this against Cirno and I got the results I was looking for. Using 1 continue and capturing all spellcards, I proceeded to Extra Stage 1. Not dying once but failing to capture any spellcard, I went to Stage 2.



Anyways, extra stages are generally harder than the normal stages. After the first stage, enemies will start attacking from behind as well. Time to make use of the extra button in the controls to shoot backwards. I like how this game did left and right shooting more compared to Gundeadligne. In Gundeadligne, you had a button to turn yourself around so you just hold down the same button to shoot. In this game, you have two separate fire buttons, one for shooting left and one for shooting right. I find that it makes it easier to not get confused with two fire buttons.

Sanae shows up as the boss in this stage. Standard boss without many tricky attacks. For me, her second to last attack was the most difficult attack she has. It's that same spread pattern while strafing which makes it really annoyng to dodge. Oh and the fact that Sanae does a Yukari and switches sides after awhile.

Oh right, take note of the background music for the stage and boss. The music in extra stages do not change so we'll be hearing these themes two more times. I'm not going to complain though. I like the boss theme.
