I have decided to start over my RTS and scale back my ambitions. I am a much better programmer than I was a year ago (still not good by any means) and so I am focusing on using design patterns to tackle the organizational problems of RTS games first. Once I have a working RTS framework to go off of (building, attacking, resources, etc) only then will I actually start to move on to the implementations of things like pathfinding, gameplay, balancing, etc.
