I have created a system that allows player and AI ships to traverse different areas in the game, which also allows them to update their position in real-time even when they are not in the same sector as the player.
One thing I forgot to mention before was the use of software called "Spacescape" to easily create detailed skyboxes for use in the game. Music is from the X series and composed by Alexei Zakharov.
