The Asset Administration Shell (AAS) is transforming the industrial landscape by setting the standard for digital twins. AAS allows seamless mapping of product and process information throughout the entire lifecycle of industrial goods to represent digital twins. This presentation will explore how AAS facilitates seamless data exchange and collaboration within industrial ecosystems, exemplified by initiatives like Manufacturing-X as well as the fulfillment of future regulations such as the Digital Product Passport (DPP). In this presentation, we will delve into the pivotal role of open source in advancing the development, adoption, and implementation of AAS. We will highlight the contributions of the Industrial Digital Twin Association (IDTA) and showcase the open-source projects under the Eclipse Foundation’s Digital Twin Top-Level Project (https://projects.eclipse.org/projects/dt). Discover how these open-source efforts are fostering co-innovation by using standardized AAS metamodels, AAS Submodels, and APIs essential for interoperable digital twin solutions. Our session addresses attendees without any specific background knowledge on the topic. Attendees will learn more about the fundamentals of Industry 4.0 as well as Digital Twin Technology. Especially, the attendees will be able to get insights on the motivation why Open Source is crucial for increasing the adopting of standards like the AAS to implement the Industrial Digital Twins.
