Unused Game Content Doboutsu no Mori + NES FDS Famicom Disk System 16 Super Mario Bros 2 Lost Levels
Super Mario Bros 2 is another recent discovery, a well-hidden secret inside of the original Japanese Gamecube port of the N64 game Doboutsu no Mori, Doboutsu no Mori + plus. Really unfortunate the game is impossible to obtain without using an external method because it is a very good game, arguable one of the better FDS games.
Here is where the situation becomes strange. The file is stored on the disc (both versions) inside of a file called Famicom.arc along with the rest of standard the games. The game actually isn't referenced to an in-game item model ID that determines the inventory and item properties so it can't be obtained in-game and is only possible to play if the game is forced to load from the file ID number.
Why was Super Mario Bros 2 not included via normal in-game methods? No idea. The original Mario Bros and Super Mario Bros are also unused as well and can be played; models also exist and though they can't be obtained without modifying and or forcing the item ID; they save to areas in the memory card save file without conflicting or overwriting other game save progress.
Nintendo definitely planned to include Super Mario Bros 2 FDS at some point during development. Maybe setting up the model and referencing it to an item and location to store the save progress in the memory card file would have been too much work at a certain deadline? Further looking the at DnM+ files and code does not give clear insight.
Side note: Zelda no Densetsu was released later as a green cartridge for the Famicom. Nintendo apparently had initial plans to release a cartridge version of Super Mario Bros 2 for the Famicom as well. I guess Nintendo knew that designing a stripped-down version of the 2C33 to include support for a memory mapper to MMC1 and FDS audio without the disk drive controller. A battery for save progress also would have added to the production cost. Additionally, a cartridge version would have been worth the investment seeing how popular Super Mario Bros 2 was for the Famicom Disk System; Nintendo ported the original prequel to the FDS.

Emulating NES games inside of an N64 emulator running within a Gamecube emulator running inside Dolphin, a Gamecube emulator! Are you confused yet?
Dolphin does emulate the NES very well. Numerous graphical and audio errors. I am using Dolphin because it is easier than setting up my Japanese orange Gamecube and using a phone camera to record objectively lower quality footage.
The problem is the that because DnM+ doesn't define a table for unused NES games, it will overwrite other save data in other games and save them to the same location inside the NES memory card file, so only one game can have a clean save file at a time.
