Unused Stages - Godzilla: Save The Earth
A look at all of the unused stages that can be found in the retail PS2 and Xbox releases of Godzilla: Save The Earth.
The first two stages are alternate versions of London and Boston. Someone with a keener eye than me can probably spot the differences between the used and unused versions of the stages, but the most apparent difference is the rendering issues found in the unused stages that, depending on the camera's position, can render the stage completely unplayable (case in point, Godzilla 2000 vs Rodan in Boston). The reason for this is that these stages were compiled for an early June 2004 build of the game whereas the retail build is a September 2004 build. Something changed in some of the file formats that results in the glitchy mess seen here. Because these stages were compiled for an earlier build of the game, they do not run in the retail engine unless you change a single byte which is a version number. This trick does not make the Carnival characters or Ebirah work unfortunately, nor does it work with the unused Seattle stage. Another difference between the alternate stages and the main stages is that there are no shield barriers in the unused versions. It's possible they were still deciding where to place the barriers and scrapped these stages before making that decision. However, the game's trailer clearly showcases some stages without shield barriers, so perhaps these were intended only to be used in promotional material: https://youtu.be/Cp1Vqu47mlI?t=32
I tried to get the AI to follow me and explore the stages a bit more, but they were having none of it and just beat the shit out of me with beams and buildings.
The other stages are all stuff I've shown before. "New_Seattle_day" is a very basic map with no buildings or structures, but there does appear to be some untextured roads. The night version is identical to the day version, and the map doesn't seem to function if you attempt to load it on a real Xbox console or the PS2 version. This map is dated 4/12/2004.
The proto rail map is clearly just a map used for testing the railer mechanics. It's neat, but nothing special.
The final unused stage is an unused version of the Mothership stage. The only difference between this version and the one that's used in the game is seemingly that there are now (invisible) shield barriers blocking off access to the far ends of the stage. This version of the Mothership was intended to be used in the game's Melee mode judging from its filename "New_MotherShip0" ("0" is appended to the names of the smaller versions of each stage). Because this stage was cut, the Mothership is completely inaccessible in the PS2 version's Melee mode which only uses the smaller variants of each stage presumably for performance reasons.
There is also an empty zip archive for a night version of the Battleships challenge.
