A game sample for Valis II, load times and all (as in, no editing for this one). This game is... decent, though it certainly isn't the best entry in the series. Actually, with this and its numerous ports, including the spin-off "Syd of Valis" (which is a super-deformed version of Valis II only for the Sega Genesis), this is argued to be the worst of them all, unless you count Valis X.

Yuko can get your standard power-ups which can be upgraded a few times that vary on power and ability. Some levels are pretty frustrating and with no good way of seeing what's above or below you in a game that delights itself with platforming segments (where falling in a pit results in death, where as it only takes life in Syd), you'll want to spend a fair deal of time getting acquainted with the levels, not so much the enemies. The enemies themselves have very simple strategies and it takes almost no time at all to learn how to beat the bosses.

I don't know what to say about this one without sounding blunt but... I think it's fairly bland, and the levels were easier to navigate in Syd of Valis and actually more thought-out too due to their design, though the lack of an armor system and power-up items being less of a necessity due to the design of the game is a plus in my book. Of course, this game has the obligatory nice CD soundtrack, but I can't give it any honorific pluses beyond that. Even the cutscenes aren't particularly noteworthy.

This game is good for its story (which isn't explained well or at all in Syd or SD Valis) and continuity within the series, but if that weren't the case, I'd actually skip this one and play "The Legend of Fantasm Soldier", "Valis III" and "Super Valis IV" for either the SNES or TGCD (Mugen Senshi Valis, Valis III, and Valis IV/Super Valis: Akaki Tsuki no Otome respectively). Still, it's one of the early U.S. TGCD games and that's worth something too. Enjoy.
