VF #6 (PS2 60fps) VF4: can I create an AI that won't use Evade?
Seeing if I can create an AI character in Virtua Fighter 4 that doesn't use Evade (side-stepping to dodge an attack, a technique they added as a last-minute thing in Virtua Fighter 3, and which drives me bonkers ; PPP). Also, playing with the game's options, and some Kumite. : P Time stamps:
0:09 - Creating Mu, my new Lei-Fei AI
1:04 - Sparring w/ Mu to teach him some moves (and avoiding using Evade, so he won't know how to do that ; )
6:43 - Creating a new Vanessa player character to fight w/ Mu
9:21 - Under Options - Settings - Game, if you hit left or right on the D pad, you can change the menu background! Some pretty nice images in here.
11:39 - VS mode, my Vanessa vs Mu, my Lei-Fei AI--trying to avoid using Evade, so Mu won't learn it!
15:38 - huh, you can win clothing items by winning VS matches : o
22:44 - Edit file: checking out the clothing items my Vanessa character won in VS; the AI characters can win them, too!
24:25 - creating a Sarah Bryant player character, Rah Rah
25:15 - taking Rah Rah into Kumite mode to blow off some steam : PP. This is probably my favorite version of Kumite / Quest Mode in the VF series--it's just endless fights, no having to go around to different "arcades" and stuff--but of course the AI uses the Evade move in it. : PPP
Some set-up complication: you need to have a controller plugged into the second controller port in order to fight your own AI character in VS mode : P, and you need to have saved their file to a memory card in the second memory card slot! Jeepers. Those AI saves start off at 600 KB each, though, so maybe it's just as well to have a whole card dedicated to them.
I was fighting Mu in VS, hoping this would help him learn and get tough. It didn't really seem to; or maybe I should say, if it was, it was happening really, really slowly. : P Pressing X or O (to tell him his last move was Bad or Good, respectively) does seem to energize him a bit, but anyway he's still pretty bad after this first half-hour of training stuff. ; P
And I think I saw him Evade once, maybe. But he hasn't done it much, at least, so at least that could be a sign this might work out eventually. But here I was still afraid to put him in vs another AI, out of fear that they would use Evade and he would learn it from them!
Another reason I like VF4 vs VF4:Evo and the VF5 games is that it doesn't have the flashing light FX, like a flash-bulb, that brightens up characters momentarily when they're hit--well, it does, but it defaults to OFF in options; in the later games, it is always on, with no way to turn it off.
Unfortunately--I didn't really realize it until after this video--VF4 does have a white screen flash effect right before each fight; the later games *don't* have that. *sigh* My dumb photosensitivity! It's not quite as harsh if I stick to stages with lighter backgrounds, like Shrine (where I was fighting against Mu w/ Vanessa).
Plus there's that lighting flash coliseum level (31:20)--but I can avoid that if I stick to VS.
Also, as you've probably noticed, VF4's PS2 version was *really* pixelated, with zero anti-aliasing effects; the 480i interlacing was really noticeable! I think it was prone to dropping below 60fps here and there, too. Graphically, things got smoothed out more in the follow-up version, Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution--but there's no AI training in that one, and as I said you can't turn off the flashing hit FX in it.
