Prior to the release of Victoria 3 I wanted to make a quick video discussing the most controversial part of the game for returning Victoria 2 and other paradox gamers, the war system. I personally I am not a major fan but Paradox has alluded that they will release a war update in the coming months or maybe as the first DLC. Still that does not seem like a great compromise to me, but we will see tomorrow as that is VIC3's public launch date (October 25th). Cheers!

The war system in vic3 discussing and why I am so concerned about it. I really want vic3 to do well and hope it does, but it is not bad to point out some of its weaknesses and explain to new people why I or others dislike them.
In the case of war, I as a player came from EU3 and EU4, where I sent most of my time playing games, in eu4, war is conducted by controlling individual units, similar to vic2, ck2 and ck3, stellaris in some sense and like hoi4 but just that hoi4 uses frontlines as well so a mixed system. EU4 Similarly has a macrobuilder that allows you to mass produce units and have them group up, one of the largest issues with vic2, and as bokoen1 said to me in a conversation yesterday, was a reason why “War was the worst part of Vicky 2. We’ve literally had games end because people didn’t wanna rebuild their armies after being stack wiped”.
Personally I have to say for vic2, war was not great, and for singleplayer the ai was quite inept running around randomly and allowing a semi competent player to beat almost any nation. However, in multiplayer it did allow for some autonomy as you could build frontlines and manage your armies to success, while there was not frontline or macrobuilder system you could make rules that did not allow players armies to run willynilly. It was not a great system, but from what I have seen from the autobattler, the lack of autonomy in the current vic3 system seems like a overcorrection to far. While I agree that victoria 3 has some great economic and political features, the war being severely dumbed down and potentially being worked on in the first dlc is not a great compromise.
In the end Victoria 3 may attract a decent amount of new players, by providing a unique and run economic and political simulator, but without war or proper multiplayer interactions, many of the old vic2 or other paradox gamers will be disinterested as time goes on until a dlc or a mod fixes the problems, which should not be the case.
I hope y’all enjoyed this short video summarizing my thoughts and I hope you have a good time playing vic3 if you choose to buy it, or waiting on playing till a future update if you don’t and seeing us youtubers play it! Cheers!
