Video Game Endings - TMNT Turtles In Time - Various Versions Comparison (1991-2009)
What with the recent announcement of a new TMNT game, Shredder's Revenge, that is set to be a throwback to the scrolling beat 'em ups of previous years, here is a compilation/comparison video of all the different versions of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles In Time - from the arcade original to the re-shelled remake!
00:20 - The original arcade version, released for the arcades in 1991 as a dedicated 4-player cabinet, as well as a 2-player conversion kit. This was a sequel to the previous TMNT arcade game that came out in 1989.
01:46 - The Super NES version was retitled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time in order to continue the numbering from the first three Turtles games on the NES. The SNES version of Turtles in Time has some notable differences in presentation. While the SNES version is missing some animations and graphics effects from the arcade version, it made extensive use of the SNES's Mode 7 forward scrolling effect for some of the levels and included some new bosses and enemies to fight, including changing the final battle with Shredder to Super Shredder from the second TMNT movie. It also has a slightly longer ending if you beat the game on 'Hard' mode.
07:33 - The Sega Megadrive/Genesis version was entitled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist/Return of the Shredder. It is heavily based on Turtles in Time and shares nearly the same soundtrack and sound effects as Turtles in Time, but the music plays faster in The Hyperstone Heist. Though there are fewer than half the levels as Turtles in Time, each level is longer. Furthermore, The Hyperstone Heist has a more aggressive enemy AI and faster-moving gameplay. There are also some new bosses to fight in this version, including a still-human Baxter Stockman and Tatsu from the first TMNT movie. Super Shredder is still the final boss in this game, although the plot has changed from a time-travelling story to rescue the Stature of Liberty to Shredder using the Hyperstone from Dimension X to shrink the entire city.
12:07 - An emulated conversion of the original arcade game was an unlockable feature after completing the first batch of missions in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: Mutant Nightmare for the Sony Playstation 2, Nintendo Gamecube and XBox. The game is emulated from the four-player version. Differences include the lack of a score counter, an entirely new soundtrack (likely due to rights issues with the original soundtrack), altered voices, and a slightly choppy frame rate compared to the arcade.
12:34 - The 2009 remake, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled, features new graphics and sounds. The graphics were remade completely in 3D, with players moving in and out of a true 3D camera. The opening and closing cinematics were remade with a stylized 2D look. The vocal quips of the arcade version return, re-recorded by the cast of the 2003 cartoon. The music was also re-done.
