After the success of Devil May Cry, Hideki Kamiya was NOT given the opportunity to work on Devil May Cry 2. In fact, according to him, he didn't even know they were making it until Capcom was already localizing it. (Maybe that's why it was bad?)

Instead, his next directorial endeavor had him leading a newly-formed team called "Team Viewtiful." During the stream, I talked about it like it's the first Clover Studio game, but that's not perfectly accurate. Team Viewtiful became Clover Studio after the release of this game and before the PS2 port.

Anyway, as a new IP, it's different in so many ways, and yet, there are still ways that you can tell it's a Kamiya game: levels are made up of several smaller missions where you're rated on points, time taken, and now damage taken; there are hidden missions that require you to go backwards to find; the VFX meter is like an inverted Devil Trigger meter; and plenty of difficulty.

So, please, join me in comparing and contrasting this with Devil May Cry!
