Volkswagen Design BOSS Says An Electric GTI Is Coming In 2026
In 2026, Volkswagen is set to introduce a groundbreaking electric version of its iconic GTI, as announced by Volkswagen's design boss Andreas Mindt on Instagram.
He posted: The Golf GTI was first unveiled at the 1975 Frankfurt Motor Show with a production run of 5000 units. To date, we have sold more than 2.8 million. In 2026, we will introduce an electric version of this iconic model.
This marks a significant evolution for the GTI, a popular model since 1975. While details are still emerging, the new electric GTI may either be a Golf GTI or an ID.2 GTI, and it is expected to be built on the MEB Entry platform for front-wheel-drive vehicles. A key feature of this new model is the redesigned "GTI" logo, where the "I" is replaced by a lightning bolt, symbolizing its shift to electric power. This development represents Volkswagen's commitment to embracing electrification in its iconic models.
