VR Furballs - VR Gameplay HTC Vive
8Cute, fun, good puzzles with tons of stuff to do. There's almost nothing to complain about with VR Furballs: Demolition.
These cute little guys don't have a lot of ugly so lets get that out of the way first.
Interacting with the tools in the world takes an extra step of clicking the trackpad after you've grabbed the item with the trigger. I haven't quite figured out why this is the case but it's an easily forgettable step that just adds frustration to interacting with the tools.
If there's a reason for this step, it should be made more clear what it is, if not it should be removed.
Along the same lines as far as adding more information, it would be nice if the special blocks were explained as they appeared. This would help with wasting time on trial and error just to see how your tools are supposed to be used instead of the trial and error of how to apply the given tools to the current problem.
Potentially related to the previous point, it felt like some special blocks just didn't function correctly at times which lead to frustration. My assumption is that this is primarily due to a lack of understanding exactly how the special blocks work but at the moment the reason is unclear and it could be a bit buggy.
All in all, these are some pretty small issues in the grand scheme of the game. VR Furballs was one of the most polished and complete feeling titles I've gotten my hands on in quite a while.
The UI may have been a bit cluttered but overall I liked how easily accessible everything was as well as the art direction behind it. I loved the changing seasons as you traversed through the various levels.
The character design was also well done. The Furballs were all cute and cuddly looking while the bad guy furballs still managed to be cute but in an evil, prickly kind of way.
As far as gameplay, there were multiple activities to participate in. More so than I was able to unlock in my initial setting. Between the 6 minigames, the leaderboard, the 3 star system and the achievements, there's plenty of game here for your buck. We didn't get around to unlocking it in this session but the level editor will also add many hours for both content creators and players.
The controls were very simple and fluid. Excepting the tool interaction issue I mentioned above. Even the teleport system and the way the game handled determining which way you're facing was very natural and easy to pick up.
I'm sure I could find more to say about the game but I'll end with this as a statement to other developers:
It's amazing how well players react to a game that's not only finished, but also fairly well polished. So many negative reviews could be avoided by following Gamily Studios example and making sure you have a quality product before releasing it to the public.
VR Furballs is definitely on the recomended list for puzzle fans and Angry Birds everywhere. If you demo VR a lot, I think this would make a fine addition to a first steps roster for new VR players.
