The primary objective of the game is to escape the town of Wellington Wells. The game will have no save feature. If the player dies or is captured, the player must start a new game. The layout of the town is not fixed but procedurally generated every new game. The town is divided into districts, each of which has its own look and customs.
The residents of the town will attack the player if they suspect he is off his Joy (see below). Doing unusual things such as breaking into houses will raise suspicion. The player can allay suspicion by consuming measured amounts of Joy, but if he takes too much he will forget his quest and the game will end. Taking Joy will cause the player to perceive the world as more pleasant than it truly is; the town appears colorful and clean when in fact many buildings are dilapidated to some degree. As smaller doses of Joy wear off, the character will become significantly hungrier and thirstier, and in extreme cases that do not provoke a game over will cause the player to lose a significant portion of time as the character follows a hallucinatory butterfly. There is a time limit to escape Wellington Wells before the Wellies' lack of attention to running the town causes it to undergo complete social collapse and rendering actual escape unfeasible.
Escape won't happen in one day. The player will have an underground hideout where he can rest, eat, and craft items. The player must steal supplies, including food, water, and weaponry.
