Transcript:

In an alternate timeline, an unemployed bricklayer assassinates Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933, and Senator Huey Long becomes president. Long keeps America out of World War II, allowing Germany’s invasion of England, Operation Sea Lion, to be successful. Eventually the Brits fought back, but they won by doing something they call the “Very Bad Thing,” an act so traumatizing that the surviving citizens invented a psychotropic drug called Joy to keep them from remembering.

Now it’s 1964 in the English island town of Wellington Wells. While this retro-futuristic dystopia is mostly peaceful, some citizens don’t react well to the mandatory intake of mind-altering Joy. These “Wastrels” are forced to live in derelict parts of town and are subject to random beatings from Joy addicts and the police Bobbies who roam the city looking for “Downers.”

Arthur Hastings, a clerk working on redacting unpleasant details from archived newspapers, stumbles upon an old story about himself and his brother, causing him to neglect his next dosage of Joy. Now sober and aware of the sick reality he lives in, Arthur’s colleagues high on Joy realize that he isn’t… and that’s a real downer.
