Around 6000 B.C., a cult began worshipping Gozer the Gozerian, a god so not-nice, it named itself twice. Thousands of Sumerians worshipped the Destructor, but the Babylonian god, Tiamat, banished Gozer from our dimension.

Thousands of years later, the destruction of World War One convinced weird surgery enthusiast and architect, Ivo Shandor, that humanity was too sick to survive. Gathering a thousand followers, Shandor started the Cult of Gozer. Shandor then designed and built the skyscraper at 55 Central Park West as a means of summoning the Destructor. The Cult also built the New York Public Library, Museum of Natural History, Sedgwick Hotel, and a secret island laboratory. The buildings formed a giant Mandala which focused spirit energy to empower Gozer and allow cult members to live on as ghosts to complete their work.

Now it's 1984. Spirit energy has collected in New York, increasing paranormal activity, and classical cellist and resident of 55 Central Park West, Dana Barrett, has a bit of a ghost problem. Thankfully, parapsychologists Ray Stanz, Peter Venkman and Egon Spengler just started their own paranormal investigations and extermination service. Though laughed out of their jobs at Columbia University, they know New York is under attack and have only one question: Who ya gonna call?
