Welcome back to our last day in Christchurch and for a stay in some interesting accommodation, to say the least! We decided to move out of our perfectly fine accommodation in our Airbnb, spend $69 and book a night at Jail Accommodation Christchurch.
This is no facade jail though! The building was finished in 1874 and designed by the same person as the Christchurch cathedral. What was the Addington prison closed in 1999 and officially became a protected item for its historic and architectural significance. Over the years it's been used as a jail, a women's prison and a military camp, so there's plenty of history scattered all around the walls and on display.
It was empty up until 2006 when a local couple bought the building, did some renovations and set it up as the award winning budget backpackers it is today! We completely accept that prison/jail is no joke at all - but this is a specifically tailored accommodation for sleeping inside, paying money to experience something that has shades of the grimness that would be part of the real world experience for those staying there over the years.
The real question though, would you spend $69 to sleep here?
