WedSNESday - Let's Play Captain Novolin - How to make diabetes even less fun
It's WedSNESday! Let's Play Captain Novolin!
The NPCs conclude the Raya Systems Edutainment Quadrilogy with perhaps one of the most (in)famous titles in the Health Hero series: Captain Novolin! The NPCs take on the role of the eponymous Captain Novolin as he power-walks across a few city blocks while trying mostly unsuccessfully to not hit aliens that look like freakishly mutated snack food.
Captain Novolin was developed by Sculptured Software for Raya Systems, and was released in 1992 as the first in the quadrilogy of "Health Hero" Edutainment titles released by Raya on the SNES. Captain Novolin teaches awareness of diabetes and proper diet through the listing of and negative reinforcement against sugary foods. It is a significant game in the history of "Therapeutic Gaming", tested in limited run in the mid '90s by the Kaiser hospital chain, with intent to get kids with diabetes to play together with their non-diabetic friends, and lessen the stigma of the disease, as well as remind the children playing the game of some of the basics of self-care.
Captain Novolin rubs shoulders with other Raya edutainment titles, Packy & Marlon, Rex Ronan: Experimental Surgeon, and Bronkie the Bronchiasaurus (A game about an athsmatic Bronchiasaurus).
