The World Ends With You is a 2007 DS game, since released on iOS and Android, that uses touch controls for a unique combat system that incorporates both the dual screens and ties thematically into Neku’s struggle to work with his partners.

Something of a cult classic, this game is noted for its music, visual style, the prominence of Japanese youth culture, memorable characters, and the involved story. Despite being very dark, the game usually doesn’t feel this way because of the humor and the oddly petty things we spend most of our time doing. Not many other thrillers feature hours of clothing shopping. Somehow, the first time through, I missed the extremely unsubtle religious imagery. That’s in there too. So let’s see how well TWEWY lives up to its reputation.
