Openness to Experience – Low Characteristics
You are low in openness to experience. People who are low in openness to experience are typically very dedicated to any work they do, and always make sure to see their tasks through to the end. You are not very artistic or imaginative, and do not see the value in unnecessary things like art and music.
You are very analytical, and are able to think quickly to solve any problem you are faced with. Your first instinct is to use tried-and-true methods when solving problems.
You tend to see things as black-and-white. You believe that people usually do not change, and people are either good or bad. You believe that someone’s personal traits and choices play a bigger role than luck or circumstance.
People who are low in openness to experience often are well-suited for careers that allow them to have daily routines, with job duties that are very clear. For example, you may be well-suited for a job in finance, mechanics, or technology.
Extraversion – Low Characteristics
You are an introvert. While you enjoy spending time with others, you truly get your energy by spending time by yourself. Spending too much time around others leaves you feeling tired and drained. Others describe you as thoughtful and quiet. Being the center of attention usually makes you feel uncomfortable.
You may not be a social butterfly, but you do an amazing job building relationships with others. You find that you typically have a few friends whom you are very close with, rather than many acquaintances. The relationships you have with others are usually very long-lasting.
Others would describe you as very detail-oriented. You listen more than you speak, and are thoughtful about whatever you say. In stressful situations, you always seem calm and level-headed.
Introverts do best in jobs that allow them to spend most of the day alone. If put into a job that requires too much time spent with others, introverts leave work feeling completely exhausted. The best jobs for introverts include those involving art, technology, or science – such as a photographer, lab worker, or computer programmer.
Neuroticism – Medium Characteristics
You are moderately neurotic – at times, you can be anxious or emotional, while at other times, you are relaxed and calm. Your mood may fluctuate slightly, depending on the day.
You describe yourself as a realist. You don’t tend to be overly optimistic or overly pessimistic, and are able to view problems clearly and realistically, considering many factors.
Your neurotic traits – such as worrying about how you are perceived by others – make you successful in your career. Coupled with your ability to remain level-headed, you have a great balance of traits to be a natural leader. You try to do your best at everything, even if there doesn’t seem to be anything in it for you. People who are moderate in neuroticism make great employees and supervisors.
People who are moderately neurotic typically do well in helping careers, such as counseling or public service.
Each trait represents a continuum. Individuals can fall anywhere on the continuum for each trait.
Evidence suggests that personality is highly stable during adulthood, although small changes may be possible.
Psychological researchers often define personality in terms of five core traits, which can be thought of as stable dispositions that drive behavior. The five-factor model of personality encompasses these basic traits: The traits, often referred to as the "Big 5," are summed up by the acronyms OCEAN or CANOE.
The theory identifies five factors: 1 extraversion (outgoing/energetic vs. solitary/reserved) 2 agreeableness (friendly/compassionate vs. critical/rational) 3 openness to experience (inventive/curious vs. consistent/cautious) 4 conscientiousness (efficient/organized vs. extravagant/careless) 5 neuroticism (sensitive/nervous vs. resilient/confident)
Many modern and traditional studies in psychology point to 5 basic dimensions of personality. Evidence of this theory has grown over the years with the principle theory emerging in 1949. The five broad personality traits described by the theory are extraversion (also often spelled extroversion), agreeableness, openness, conscientiousness, and neuroticism.
The five basic personality traits is a theory developed in 1949 by D. W. Fiske (1949) and later expanded upon by other researchers including Norman (1967), Smith (1967), Goldberg (1981), and McCrae & Costa (1987).
