Whilst watching @TruthWanted , I was surprised to see some commenters had got confused about Biogenesis and had come to believe that there was some issue with it under naturalism (etc), that it wasn't scientific, or that, as one commenter said, Pasteur only came up with it because of his religious beliefs.
I spend a few minutes laying the groundwork of material versus efficient causes and where theists and atheists differ in their understanding of those causes, but also where the commonality is.
I then provided a whistle stop tour of the history of spontaneous generation, and how Biogenesis developed gradually as a series of experiments to show that organisms weren't rapidly appearing in things like meat, grain, or beef broth (the examples commonly referred to). Instead, they were a consequence of reproduction, just as with larger organisms where we are readily able to see this happen.
Thus, Biogenesis posited the maxim, life begets life.
Spontaneous generation also became known as abiogenesis, the anthesis to biogenesis, and it is this that has lead to some significant confusion among believers and nonbelievers alike. The hallmark of this theory was its rapidity and the emergence of organisms that turned out to have "parents." It wasn't the abiogenesis that is used today to talk about the ultimate origin of life.
The ultimate origin of life is the material cause of life we mentioned earlier, and by logical necessity must have been non-living material. When we identify that this is discussing material cause, not efficient cause, there is no conflict between believers and nonbelievers. The difference lies in understanding the efficient cause. Nonbelievers hold that life is a consequence of a series of processes. Believers hold that the processes must have been directed or used by an intelligence. This would constitute the answer to the question, "How did God create life?" for a believer.
