What happened to New Super Mario Bros?
The New Super Mario Bros franchise has been an icon in the gaming world, it was the game to get out and play with friends. With its colorful graphics, catchy music, and innovative gameplay, it quickly became one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time. However, in recent years, the franchise has been criticized for becoming stale and repetitive, especially with the release of the Super Mario Maker.
The New Super Mario Bros series began in 2006 with the release of "New Super Mario Bros" on the Nintendo DS. The game was a huge success, selling over 30 million copies worldwide. It was praised for its nostalgic gameplay, bringing back classic elements from the original Super Mario Bros games while introducing new mechanics such as wall jumping and mega mushrooms.
However, as the series continued with "New Super Mario Bros Wii'' and "New Super Mario Bros 2" on the Nintendo 3DS, it became apparent that the franchise was recycling the same formula without any significant innovations. Fans felt like the games were repetitive rather than a brand new sequel. Personally for me, this did not affect me as I always wanted to beat the new installment as fast as possible.
The games follow a predictable pattern of linear levels with similar themes, such as grasslands, deserts, and castles etc. The power-ups are recycled from previous games, with only minor additions like the propeller suit and the gold flower in other games of the franchise. Even the boss battles are formulaic, with players facing off against Bowser and his minions in a similar manner in every game. Like fighting boom boom and other bosses gets really repetitive with only 3 taps required to beat the boss.
The New Super Mario Bros series also lacks the creativity and experimentation of other Mario games. Games like Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Odyssey introduced new gameplay mechanics and unique levels that kept players engaged and excited. The New Super Mario Bros series, on the other hand, feels safe and predictable, with few surprises or new ideas.
With the reboot of the Wii u’s entry into the franchise on switch it sends the message that Nintendo aren’t very keen on the idea of a new installment into the series. Mario Maker 1, 2 have overridden the game with players able to make any level they want from a high to low difficulty. Of course with the release of the mario movie its almost certain that there is a new mario game in the works and the game unfortunately is not a new super mario bros game and I don’t think it ever will be.
In conclusion, the New Super Mario Bros franchise has fallen from its former glory due to its lack of originality and creativity. While the games still sell well, they are no longer the groundbreaking and innovative titles that made the franchise popular. It’s unfortunate to see the franchise go as I loved playing the games as a kid but the passion put into those games can be put to better use in different Mario games
