Those flare effect-like projectiles will come at you at high speed if you take too long to defeat the bosses in Dragon Spirit. This can be seen at the 1:00 minute mark.
Note that this is part of the Antstream Arcade challenge where you tackle the first five bosses at lowest firepower like it's a boss rush challenge, hence the rare situation encounter. Normally, you face bosses with full or partial preparation and it's essential that you're at least partially prepared for some of the bosses in the PC-Engine version for instance. Being partially prepared means having collected important powerup items before the boss battle.
