Kakashi Hatake is a unique story to tell. You see, Team Minato during the canon events mirrored Team 7 as it is now. Each member of Team Minato was themselves a mirror to the Team 7, with Rin of course being Sakura, and Obito of course being Naruto. This leaves us with one other option for who Kakashi was supposed to be. Sasuke. Kakashi, like Sasuke, understood loss. What it felt like to lose the ones you loved. He lost his father, he lost Obito, he lost Rin, and for a time, that destroyed Kakashi, left him a broken man whose only recourse was to break others during his time in the Anbu. But the straw that broke the camel’s back wasn’t just the death of Minato and Kushina, but the Uchiha Massacre. Kakashi had known Itachi personally, and to a degree felt responsible. Kakashi had every reason to, at any point, turn out exactly as Sasuke had. Poisoned by hate. But he didn’t. Kakashi is a path divergence for Sasuke. A what-if in his own right. What if Kakashi never turned against Konoha. That sounds like a great story to tell one day as well. It’s why this story feels like it is so plausible. Kakashi did have a reason to turn bad. A good one. And that’s exactly what he’s doing now. The question is what will become of him on this dark path. Can he be brought back? Or is this curtains for everyone?
