A common storytelling mechanic that one can find in many stories is the “Generation Xerox” trope. This trope is more than just one generation inheriting the will, strengths, or powers of the previous generation. No, this trope goes deeper. You inherit also their whole life-story. It’s like watching a retelling of the same story over and over again. The cast is new, but the play is the same. That sort of thing. And Naruto uses this trope as well. The trope of the mentor and their three students. The traits are generally each character defined by personality and role. Jiraiya, Obito, Naruto. These three served the “knucklehead ninja” role on the team. Sasuke, Kakashi, Orochimaru. These three served the “serious prodigy” role on the team. Sakura, Tsunade, Rin. These three served the “strong female” role on the team. And as for the mentors? They all ended up being Hokage at some point who felt it important to teach their students about team work, with one student always rejecting it and somehow becoming a member of the villainous group “Akatsuki” at some point. The mirrored nature of these stories intrigues me. But that one reason why I want to shake it up, because there is a difference between Team Kakashi and Team Minato. Unlike the common loss of the “serious prodigy” in the team, with Team Kakashi, it was the “knucklehead ninja”. That’s a bit of a difference. Not every time does history repeat itself exactly. And that’s what I want to focus on. What if we altered these teams a bit? What if Team Minato had TWO serious prodigies on it? And what if Team Kakashi had TWO knucklehead ninjas on it? That’s what we’re here to find out. Sit right back and grab some popcorn, we’re gonna get into this.
