What Is A Ram Air Turbine (RAT) & How Can It Save Planes in Emergencies
12When everything fails on an aircraft — engines, hydraulics, electrical systems — there’s one last backup that quietly saves lives: the Ram Air Turbine, or RAT.
In this video, I break down what a RAT is, how it works, and why it matters. You’ll see actual footage from my live Microsoft Flight Simulator flight in the CRJ-700 where I experienced a full electrical failure and the RAT deployed — giving me just enough control to safely finish the flight.
We’ll also look at how the RAT played a role in real-world aviation incidents, including the tragic Air India 171 crash, Air Transat 236, and US Airways 1549 - Miracle on the Hudson.
