What is Chlorine Gas and how to protect yourself from it
Chlorine gas (CL2) was the very first chemical weapon used efficiently in World War One. Chlorine gas is as the name applies a gas/vapour version of chlorine, once chlorine gas is inhaled it reacts with water in the body, causing chemical burns to the lungs, throat and eyes, in high concentration it can cause chemical burns to the skin, at least 5000 soldiers were killed by chlorine gas during the first world war, however the invention and adoption of gas masks/respirators quickly lead to chlorine gas being considered a nuisance rather than a threat.
In low concentrations chlorine can cause coughing, sneezing, sore throats and nausea but is generally not fatal, once the concentration is high enough death can occur from asphyxiation very quickly.
Chlorine leaks are common in civilian industry so knowing how to protect yourself from it is very useful information.
Chlorine is an Inorganic Vapour, so it is stopped by Inorganic Vapour/B filters, however I would recommend full ABEK-P3 filters or CBRN filters as they also stop other chemical threats that may occur at the same time.
