What is Google Authenticator?
Find out What Google Authenticator is.
i. Android malware can still steal 2FA codes from the Google Authenticator app in a few ways:
**1. Accessibility permissions.** Accessibility permissions allow apps to read the content of other apps' screens and perform actions on their behalf. Malware can abuse accessibility permissions to read the 2FA codes generated by the Google Authenticator app and send them to the attacker.
**2. Keylogging.** Keylogging malware records all of the keystrokes that are typed on a device. This means that malware can record the 2FA codes that are typed into the Google Authenticator app and send them to the attacker.
**3. Screen recording.** Screen recording malware records everything that is displayed on a device's screen. This means that malware can record the 2FA codes displayed in the Google Authenticator app and send them to the attacker.
To protect your 2FA codes from being stolen by Android malware, you should:
* Only install apps from trusted sources.
* Be careful about what permissions you grant to apps. Only grant apps the permissions that they need to function properly.
* Use a strong antivirus app to scan your device for malware regularly.
* Keep your device's operating system and apps up to date.
You can also follow these additional tips to protect your 2FA codes:
* Enable multi-factor authentication on all of your online accounts.
* Use a password manager to store your strong passwords and 2FA codes.
* Use a different device for generating 2FA codes, such as a dedicated hardware security key.
If you suspect that your device has been infected with malware, you should immediately change the passwords for all of your online accounts and contact your bank or financial institution.
