OpenId Connect vs. SAML OpenId Connect is built on the process flows of OAuth 2.0 and typically uses JWT (JSON Web token) format for the id-token. SAML flow is independent of OAuth 2.0, and relies on the exchange of messages for authentication in XML SAML format (instead of JWT format).
