WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD POWER FACTOR
Power factor correction is a technique used to improve the efficiency of electrical power systems. Power factor is the ratio of real power to apparent power in a circuit. Real power is the power consumed by the circuit and is measured in watts (W). Apparent power is the product of voltage and current and is measured in volt-amperes (VA).
In electrical systems, some loads, such as motors and transformers, require reactive power in addition to real power to function properly. Reactive power is the power consumed by the system due to the presence of reactive components in the load, such as inductors and capacitors, and is measured in volt-amperes-reactive (VAR). This reactive power does not contribute to useful work and results in wastage of energy.
Power factor correction involves adding corrective devices, such as capacitors and inductors, to the electrical system to reduce the amount of reactive power required and thus increase the power factor. This reduces energy wastage and results in a more efficient system.
Benefits of power factor correction include:
- Reduced energy costs
- Increased system capacity
- Improved voltage regulation
- Reduced carbon footprint
