What Made Red Dead Redemption 2 One Hell of a Game?
1,214The open world genre has outdone itself many times over in the last ten years or so. With games like Sleeping Dogs bringing new ideas into the fold at the beginning of the last decade, Grand Theft Auto 5 elaborating on that even further, then games like The Witcher 3 and Horizon Zero Dawn doing their own things with it, it’s a sight to behold to see just how far the genre has come in recent years.
That said, while all of the aforementioned games deserve their own heaps of praise, it was 2018’s Red Dead Redemption 2 that really raised the stakes to a ridiculous, seemingly untouchable level in terms of sheer scope and that all-important balance between quantity and quality. While some games since Read Dead 2’s launch might come close to achieving similar things by using it as a north star to follow, the truth is nothing really challenged Red Dead 2 in any meaningful way and probably won’t for a while. If you find yourself on the fence about giving this game a shot, perhaps this examination of what makes it such a hell of a game might just change your mind.
