What Makes The West Great - Western Values
9The West endures a lot of criticism, but here I talk about what makes the West great - our enlightenment values: the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happines, in short. Specifically I am talking about these values or virtues in Western society:
Rationalism;
Self Criticism;
Disinterested Search for Truth (Science and Philosophy, if you like);
The Separation of Church and State;
The Rule of Law;
Equality Before the Law;
Freedom of Conscience and Expression;
Human Rights;
Liberal Democracy.
I also discuss some side issues such as the protests in Hong Kong and the kinds of people our elite Universities look for to educate and enhance our societies: people who will question authority; who will rattle the cages of the complacent, the stupid and the corrupt. I also comment on how the West has thriving civil society and the rest of the world, largely, does not.
