About this video: So you are wanting to stream to TwitchTV, but it is very confusing to figure out how much bitrate you should use, what quality you should stream out, and even how good of internet you need to make your stream watchable. Well, in today's video, I'm going to show you exactly how to figure out the best bitrate for your stream's quality, your own internet connection, and Twitch in general.
Twitch actually has a guide on encoding settings that you can check out linked below. This is very helpful, but I'm going to going over this in-depth and tell you some other general tips that I have picked along the way from streaming myself.
First things first though, most stream software has auto-configuration and bitrate settings that look at your computer's hardware and your internet speed to set your stream's quality and bitrate. I would recommend doing this if you can, and unless you run into any issues, stream with the settings your streaming software sets itself. If you are having issues, let's go ahead and start by figuring out your internet's upload speed.
You see most internet service providers market download speed. For Twitch streaming though, we need to look at upload speed. In some areas, it isn't uncommon to have 30MB download with only 3MB upload. How can you figure out your internet's upload speed? It's pretty simple. Go to the speed test link in the description and run a speed test. It will give you your upload speed and download speed. Once you have your upload speed, you need to convert it to kilobytes. You can do this by moving the decimal 3 places. Thus, a 3.5MB upload speed would be 3,500KB. An 8MB upload speed would end up being 8,000KB speed.
Once you figure out your upload speed, we can start looking at the max bitrate you can stream at. I wouldn't recommend streaming at a bitrate any higher than two thirds your upload speed. For example, if you have a 3,000KBs upload speed, you will need to stream at a no more than a 2,000KBs bitrate.
So, now that we have all of that figured out, what is the recommended bitrate for 1080P 60FPS streaming on Twitch? Well, anywhere between 4,500 and 6,000 will work perfectly. 720P 60FPS is 3,500 to 5,000. If you are want to stream at 30FPS, Twitch recommends 3,500 to 5,000 for 1080P and 2,500 to 4,000 for 720P.
Overall, you will need at least A 3.5 to 4MB per second upload speed to stream to Twitch at a reasonable quality. And with that, you now know how to find the perfect bitrate for you when streaming on Twitch. if you have any questions, please let me know if the comment down below, and give the video a thumbs up and subscribe if you haven't already. Thank you very, very much in advance! It really does help us out.
