What The Hell Happened To Ridge Racer?
With games like Daytona USA, Out Run, and Pole Position who needs anything else? Well, if you were to pose that question to Namco back in 1993 they would certainly have an answer for you. Ridge Racer was the love child of assets from Sim Racer, an older racing franchise, and an F1 racing game that Namco originally wanted to make but ended up deciding on a more arcade-y drift-heavy experience that started off in Japanese arcades and eventually sliding their way onto Sony's first Playstation console.
To this day, many veteran Playstation gamers look back on the original few games with great admiration. This was a time when the racing genre was very different and the likes of Gran Turismo, Need For Speed, and Forza had not yet established themselves as the big 3 franchises leading the pack. 1993 was an opening for somebody to step in and entertain gamers that were coming off of games like Outrun and Daytona USA, and wanted to get back on the track with something new.
Namco wasn't the only company to step in, but they would absolutely be one of the most noteworthy contestants competing for the affection of racers for the next few years. However, these days, that mantle has long been passed on to other franchises. Gamers today, especially those who aren't old enough to have a real driver's license, are not nearly as familiar with the franchise due to it's lack of quality releases. So why is that? Why has Ridge Racer come to a screeching hault while other racers blow past it? What the hell happened to Ridge Racer?
