What will Gameplay look like in Sail VR? | Dev Log #20
In this Sail VR Dev Log we talk about the different types of gameplay that will be available on launch. Sail VR gameplay will include bounty hunts, treasure hunts and smuggler runs.
What is Sail VR?
Sail is an open world pirate game for the Oculus Quest and Oculus Quest 2 being developed by Red Team 19 using the Unity3d engine. A pre-alpha version of Sail is available on App Lab and SideQuest for FREE!!! And has been rated as one of the best app lab games. Some people are even calling Sail Sea of Thieves VR. But please understand that it is not sea of thieves VR and we are not copying SOT in any way. Sail is a unique pirate adventure game and will have unique gameplay that could only be achieved in VR.
How do you Level Up in Sail?
To understand leveling & ranking up in Sail there are two important aspects of the game you need to understand.
First, gold & treasure values are only saved if you bring them back to your pirate hideout alive. The player's hideout will be a cave that holds their wealth of treasure and some other player items. Second, depending on the amount of treasure & gold in your inventory during a game session will determine your "Danger Level" which will be indicated by 1 to 5 skulls. (1 being lowest, 5 being highest. Think GTA Five Star system). So the player will go out collect treasure and get a higher danger level and if they want to lower their danger level they'll have to go back to their hideout and stash their loot. Now that you understand that we can talk about ranking up.
There will be five pirate "levels" or "ranks" that can be achieved in Sail. To Rank up the player will have to go out and collect as much treasure and loot as possible and survive until they achieve a 5/5 danger level. Once they do that they must make it back to their hideout alive and if they can they will be ranked up to the next level.
What will VR Treasure hunts look like in Sail?
Treasure hunts in VR will be epic!
In Sail there will be 5 different types of treasure chests you can hunt for: wooden, bronze, silver, gold, and diamond. Depending on which type of chest you are hunting will determine how many keys you will need to collect in order to open the chest. To start a hunt a player will have to go to the treasure shop and purchase a map. Upon purchasing the map the player's map will be updated to show the general area of the key. The player will then have to sail into the indicated area until they are able to narrow down which island the objective is on. The player will then need to disembark from their ship and explore the island to find the key. Depending on the type of chest they are pursuing will determine how times and on how many islands they will need to repeat this. Upon gaining all the keys for their chest they will then have to find the chest and open it. Upon opening it they will be rewarded will loot and another treasure map. But beware the more loot a player has on them will increase their danger level and send more pirates after them.
What does a bounty hunt look like in Sail?
Bounty hunts are exclusively naval combat. In the port town there will be a most wanted board showing tiers of wanted enemy pirate captains. The player can take one of the posters and accept the bounty hunt to track down and kill the pirate indicated. Upon accepting the hunt their map will indicate a position where the pirate was last seen. From there the player will have to sail to the area to see if the pirate or one of his underlings are there. If an underling is there the player will have to best them in naval combat and by sinking their ship the player will get a clue to another known location of the wanted pirate.
If the wanted pirate is there, the player will engage with his ship in naval combat and if player wins the enemy pirate ship will be disabled and the player will be allowed to board. Once on the enemy ship the player will have to fight through waves of the enemy pirate's crew and after beating them will have to beat the wanted enemy pirate in hand to hand combat. If the player wins, the player will be rewarded for completing the bounty.
What does a smuggler run look like in Sail?
Smuggler runs are how players will upgrade their weapons in Sail. A smuggler will appear on a random sand bar in the VR open world. Upon finding the smuggler the player will be notified of a particular piece of treasure the smuggler is looking for. The player can then go out and explore the other sandbars for the treasure and if they can find it, survive and return to the smuggler, they will take the treasure and ask for one of the players weapons. The smuggler will then take the weapon and upgrade it to the next level and return it to the player.
