Few would defend the wild disparities in wealth in the world today and most support equality of opportunity. Yet while societies have tried to level the playing field, the rich are getting richer while the children of poor families struggle to improve their situation. And it is not just billionaires. The huge increase in property prices, 20 fold in the last 50 years, has entrenched wealth and opportunity across a swathe of middle class households while making it harder for the under privileged to escape poverty. If we want to reduce inequality must we take a much more radical approach to inheritance?
Award-winning journalist and broadcaster David Aaronovitch, British commentator and former economics editor at the BBC Paul Mason and Chief Executive of Demos Polly Mackenzie discuss how to tackle inherited wealth. Rana Mitter hosts.
