On January 21, 2019, a Dutch F-16 Fighting Falcon struck itself straight. At the training site in Vliehors, two F-16s from the Royal Netherlands Air Force engaged a simulated target on the ground. The M61 Vulcan 20-millimeter Gatling gun, an in-built weapon of the F-16, was utilized by one pilot. One of the shots struck the jet on the outside, and the engine intake of the aircraft had at least partially ingested a 20-millimeter round. The F-16 appeared to have flown straight into its own spray of cannon rounds, contrary to the pilot's first assumption that it was a bird strike. Luckily, nobody was hurt in this exceedingly unusual accident, and the pilot landed at a neighboring air base after following emergency procedures. Although the F-16 wasn't seriously damaged, this kind of incident has occurred before. A US Navy Grumman F-11 Tiger fighter aircraft was shot down by itself in 1956, when it flew into a hail of its own gun rounds. After firing his four Colt Mk 12 20-millimeter cannons, the pilot raced into his own rounds a minute later, shooting down his own aircraft and soberly hurting himself.
