After 1850s the spread of Railways created a new demand. Railways were essential for colonial trade and for the movement of imperial troops. To run train, woods was needed as fuel, and to lay railway lines sleepers were essential. Each mile of railway track needed 1760 to 2000 sleepers.

From 1860s the railway network expanded rapidly. As the railway tracked spread through India, a large number of trees were \( \because \) cut down. The goverrment gave contracts to individuals tor
1. supply the woods. These contractors began cutting tree indiscriminately and lead to fast disappearing of forest.
