As soon as I realized I could buy damage upgrades I knew I had to have them all. One simply adds a chance to do 50% more damage on hit, another adds attack damage while increasing damage taken. Between the two enemies die a lot faster and that makes things quicker for me. Especially the grinding aspect since enemies give me the money, the faster they go the faster I get rich and buy all those upgrades. Aside from that I buy triple jump which helps me get into some very strange places, and that's a good thing in a game that rewards exploring. This game is great.
