When US Navy Landed C-130 On An Aircraft Carrier In 1963 #shorts
On October 30th, 1963, the US Navy attempted to land a C-130 Hercules on an aircraft carrier for the first time. The C-1 30 was being studied by the Navy for potential deployment as a "super COD." The COD here refers to the "Carrier Onboard Delivery" aircraft, not the "Call of Duty" game. A feasibility analysis of using the large propjet on the USS Forrestal, CVA-59, was ordered by the Chief of Naval Operations. On October 8th, the US Marine Corps loaned a KC-130F refueler to the US Navy. The first ocean landings took place on October 30 amid 40-knot winds. The crew accomplished 29 touch-and-go landings, 21 full-stop landings without arrest, and 21 takeoffs without assistance while carrying a total gross weight of 85,000 pounds. The Navy was pleased to learn that the aircraft required only 745 feet for takeoff and 460 feet for landing roll when loaded to capacity. A large, "LOOK MA, NO HOOK," sign was spray-painted on the aircraft. But later, the C-130 was refused for a smaller COD aircraft.
