Hey everyone, it’s Leaflit! In today’s video, I'm reacting to a post from Kaizen D. Asiedu, explaining that slavery didn’t start with white people—it’s ancient, global, and especially rooted in African history, long before the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

This message matters. While European colonialism and the Atlantic slave trade took a racialized form, slavery—under various systems—existed across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East for millennia:

The Trans-Saharan and Red Sea slave trades predate the Atlantic trade, moving captives across Africa and into the Islamic world for centuries.

Islamic empires, especially during the Abbasid era, implemented extensive chattel slavery involving captured non-Muslims across vast domains.

Ethiopia had slavery systems dating back to 1495 BC, abolished only in the mid-20th century despite being embedded in its culture for thousands of years.

As historian David Eltis noted, “almost all peoples have been both slaves and slaveholders at some point in their histories.”

Understanding this global history is important—not to excuse European slavery—but to recognize that the moral problem of slavery spans all civilizations. It reminds us that our fight must be against oppression everywhere—not blind to certain histories.
