Who Died And Made Him King?
On May 6th 2023, Britain the country I have the "pleasure" of living in will be crowning its new King Charles III. For some this is a momentous occasion that heralds a new era for the country after the stable and mostly popular reign of Elizabeth II. For some of us though, this is a symbol of many of the things wrong with Britain and so, I wondered, who died and made him king?
In this video I try to tackle the issue of monarchy from its roots all the way to the present day. From the Pharaohs of old like Narmer and Double Falcon (yes, that is what we call him) all the way to William the Conqueror and Charles I and III. I also tackle the history of Republics, their prevalence in history and how they've been around as long as people have asked the question "why do we need a king?"
I take a dive into Britain's own Republican history, looking at the Commonwealth (also known as The Protectorate) and how Oliver Cromwell may have ruined it for everyone. There's always one who has to do that for us, but his failures led to the restoration of the deposed Charles I's son and his posthumous execution. I go into how it went so wrong and how that may have impacted Republicanism more generally, from precipitating crisis in the Dutch Republic to scaring a lot of other countries.
In the final section I try to tackle the big question, why should we be Republicans now? And how has the modern movement for a republic and those who claim to follow those principles failed us, or at least how can they improve? Because I think I speak for a lot of us when I say, make it stop.
