Why Is British Housing F**ked?
Housing, everyone needs it, but it's so damn expensive in the UK and also it's not very good. So why has this happened in country where we presumably used to be able to build and maintain decent housing without it costing a small fortune? Well luckily I'm here to help. In this video the plan was to go through what the state of British housing today is, both in terms of its prohibitive expense and the low quality.
Then I decided to explore how we got to such a state, with everyone's favourite privatiser of the furnaces in hell Margaret Thatcher in the firing line, even though she was more of an accelerant rather than a root cause this time. The blame also lies with the type of houses we tend to build in the UK, our allergy to building up and the fact that people can't seem to stop themselves getting holiday homes in Wales and Cornwall (seriously, stop it).
Finally before I wrap up, I take a look at some responses, from both the UK wide government (such as the attempt to bridge the "deposit gap") and an interesting idea from the Welsh government to raise council tax on empty properties. As well as the opposition Labour Party's ideas that never got to be fulfilled, like actually building houses for one and the YIMBY solutions to the problem. What all of these acknowledge and why they don't quite reckon with the actual big bad at play here: landlordism.
This video is brought to you by: it's my birthday soon and my landlord finally replaced our broken bed. Hooray!
