Setting
The Outer Worlds is set in an alternate timeline, with the point of divergence beginning when United States President William McKinley was not assassinated by an anarchist in 1901. As a result, Theodore Roosevelt never succeeded McKinley as President and large business trusts were never broken up, leading to a hyper-corporate, class centric society dominated by the power of mega-corporations and robber barons, which by the distant future, have begun to colonize space. The game takes place in the year 2355 in the Halcyon System.
Introduction Story
The Stranger, also known as "the unknown variable", is a passenger aboard the colony ship Hope, which is bound for the distant Halcyon system, wholly owned and operated by corporations. During its journey, the ship's skip drive malfunctions and it is forced to continue using its sublight engines, extending the trip from ten years to sixty. Since Halcyon was colonized through other means, the Hope is unexpectedly found adrift with its colonists unable to be revived and the Halcyon Holdings Corporate Board decided to abandon the colonists. The Hope is moved into orbit over the ice planet Typhon and its existence covered up.
Thirty-five years later, the colony is in fact on the verge of complete collapse. Despite the assurances of the Board, life in the colony is far from perfect. The main problem being slow and subtle starvation of the entire population due to Earth food being too low in nutrients.

Adelaide was formerly the only flavor specialist working for the Edgewater Saltuna Cannery. She was good at her job and her skills allowed the cannery to sell exotic flavors of saltuna including citrus-flavored.
Adelaide was one of the first people to leave Edgewater. Her decision to do so followed the death of her son, Marvin. Marvin worked at the Saltuna Cannery and was one of the first people in Edgewater to fall sick with plague. When Marvin died after Reed Tobson refused to use the town's limited resources on treating him, Adelaide gathered her belongings and left the town. She settled in the Botanical Labs and other deserters from Edgewater eventually joined her camp. However, despite starting a new life, Adelaide has never forgiven Reed for the death of her son.
The success of the Deserters' camp springs predominantly from Adelaide's ability to grow food for their members, despite the sourness of the soil which prevented Spacer's Choice botanists from being able to grow any crops for Edgewater. This has not only kept the Deserters fed but also free of plague. Adelaide's secret is that she has been grinding up human corpses and mixing them in with her fertilizer for years.

This facility is owned and formally operated by Spacer's Choice, however the company shut it down when its botanists were unable to grow decent crops due to the poor soil quality. It currently serves as a refuge for Adelaide McDevitt and other deserters from Edgewater, and the former has made the soil fertile again by grinding up human corpses to mix with her fertilizer. The location is powered solely by the nearby geothermal power plant.
