Why Do Sailors On Nuclear Submarines Smell Ammonia?
Once underwater, nuclear-powered submarines are sealed off from the outside world. Because they're sealed tightly, the air inside needs to be purified. To remove carbon dioxide, or CO2, from the air, US nuclear submarines use a chemical called amine, which smells like ammonia.
